다윗은 온 유다와 이스라엘의 왕이 되고 또 성궤까지 다윗 성에 들어오자 장막에 들어가 앉아서 지난 날을 회상한다.  40여년의 세월이 금방 지나갔다.  돌아보면 하나님의 은혜임을 깨닫고, 전에 주신 주님의 언약이 이루어짐을 보고 감탄하며 주님을 높인다.

재미있는 것은 18절부터 29절 꽤 많은 말을 여호와 앞에 하는데 정작 하나님께서는 이에 대해 응답이 없다.  하나님이 말씀하시지 않는 이유는 보통 두 가지다.  하나는 인간이 죄 등 여러 문제가 있어서 말씀을 들을 준비가 되지 않았거나 아니면 굳이 응답하지 않아도 마음에 흡족하시기 때문이다.  아닌게 아니라 다윗의 오늘 고백은 사실 하나님의 말씀 자체이다.  그는 자신의 이야기를 하는 것 같지만 사실 성령에 사로 잡혀 하나님의 어떠하심을 선포하고 있다.  그리고 그 선포의 내용은 전에 하신 하나님의 말씀을 되뇌이는 것이다.

법궤 안에는 원래 십계명 돌판만 들어있었다.  하지만 만나 항아리와 아론의 싹난 지팡이도 있는 줄로 잘못 알 때가 많다.  만나는 광야 생활이 끝날 즈음 그쳤고 아론의 싹난 지팡이도 그 유효기간이 있다.  하지만 하나님의 말씀은 영원하고 그 말씀 자체가 하나님이시다. (요 1:1)  그렇다고 성경책 앞에 꿇어 앉아 책 자체를 경배하면 안되지만 우리가 말씀을 읽을 때 살아계신 하나님 앞에 나아오는 것이다.  아, 황송하다.

다윗이 '하나님 마음에 합한 자'라 칭함을 입은 것은 그가 완벽한 사람이기 때문이 아니었다.  오히려 그의 죄를 열거하자면 챙피할 정도다.  하지만 그는 하나님을 온전히 의지하기를 갈망했고 주의 언약의 말씀을 따라 행했다.  언약의 말씀에 없는 것에 대해서 바라는 것은 야망을 품는 것이다.  ‘소년이여 야망을 가져라’는 하나님의 말씀이 아니다.  믿는 이들은 야망이 아니고 비전 혹은 이상을 품은 이들인데, 이것은 사람에게서 오는 것이 아니라 하나님이 주셔야 가능하다.  내가 가진 비전이 하나님이 주신 것인지 불확실하다면 그것은 나의 야망일 경우가 많다.  27절을 보면 다윗의 기도는 하나님 말씀에 입각한 기도를 하는 것을 배울 수 있다.  하나님이 말씀하셨기에 그 말씀으로 기도한다.  29절의 ‘주 여호와께서 말씀하셨사오니’가 있기 때문에 ‘주의 종의 집이 영원히 복을 받게 하옵소서’가 가능하다.  ‘누구든지 주의 이름을 부르는 자는 구원을 얻으리라’는 말씀이 있기에 우리가 주를 부를 때 구원 얻는다.

세월호에 대해 많은 지적과 분석과 비난이 있지만 신기한 것은 이 사건에 대해 불신자들이 하나님을 비난한다는 것이다.  왜 믿지도 않는 하나님을 운운하며 비난할까?  사실 계시록 말씀에는 불신자들이 하나님을 비방하는 얘기가 나온다.  믿지도 않으면서 비방한다… 대단하지 않은가? 

(계 16:9) 『사람들이 크게 태움에 태워진지라 이 재앙들을 행하는 권세를 가지신 하나님의 이름을 비방하며 또 회개하지 아니하고 주께 영광을 돌리지 아니하더라』  (계 16:11) 『아픈 것과 종기로 말미암아 하늘의 하나님을 비방하고 그들의 행위를 회개하지 아니하더라』  (계 16:21) 『또 무게가 한 달란트나 되는 큰 우박이 하늘로부터 사람들에게 내리매 사람들이 그 우박의 재앙 때문에 하나님을 비방하니 그 재앙이 심히 큼이러라』

더 황당한 것은 믿는 이들 조차 ‘하나님이 살아 계시면 어떻게 이런 일이 일어날 수 있는가’라며 분통해 한다.  아… 하나님이 계시면 사자는 다른 동물을 잡아먹지 말아야 하는가?  배나 비행기는 중력을 거스려야 하는가?  모든 것이 (우리의 기준으로) ‘완벽’하게 돌아가야 하는가?  결국 완벽하지 못한 것의 원인이 인간의 타락이었음을 인정하기 싫어 한다… 더우기 하나님이 그러실 수 없도록 과연 각자 우리 믿는 이들이 목숨을 걸고 기도하며 또 세상을 변화시키기 위해 썩어지는 밀알의 삶을 살고 있는가?  도무지 우리는 하나님 이라는 거룩한 분에 대해 왈가왈부할 자격이 없다.  다만 그 분의 말씀이 이루어짐을 믿고 따를 뿐이다.  (사고를 당한 아이들과 가족들에 대해 아무런 느낌이 없다는 것은 아니다.  지난 포스팅에 사건에 대한 안타까움을 올려 놓았다.)

주님, 나의 46년 삶을 돌아 봅니다.  다윗의 삶과 비교할 때 창피한 것만 비슷한 것 같네요.  하지만 주님의 약속의 말씀을 붙잡습니다.  오래 참으시는 주님, 나를 자녀 삼으시고 성령을 주시기를 기뻐하시는 주님, 주님 안에 거하기 원합니다.  주님만을 나의 만족과 위로 삼게 하소서.  과거를 돌아보니 그래도 조금은 성장한 내 모습을 인해 주님께 감사를 드립니다.  어디로 튈지 모르는 나의 어떠함이 사라지고 임의로 부는 바람같은 성령 따라 살게 하소서.

Before the Lord – before the Word

As David became the king of Judah and Israel, he is now reminded of his past as he sits before the ark in the tabernacle.  Forty years have gone by so quickly.  Looking back, it seems all God’s grace, David exalts that the covenant of the Lord has now been fulfilled in his life.

Interesting thing is that he utters a lot from verse 18 and 29 yet the Lord God does not seem to care.  When God does not answer or speak, there may be two different reasons.  One reason is that the man is not ready to hear the word of God due to his follies or circumstances.  The other reason may be when God does not have to speak since what man has said totally satisfies Him.  Actually David’s confession is the Word of God.  He seems to speak things of his life, yet he proclaims God’s nature through the work of the Spirit.  And what he confesses is based on what God has spoken before.

In the ark of the covenant was only the stone tablet of the Ten Commandment – maybe the first tablet before we had iPad(j/k).  Many people think it also had the manna jar and Aaron’s budded staff.  As the people of Israel entered the good land, the manna had stopped.  Aaron’s budded staff had its expiration date as well.  Yet the Word of God is eternal and the Word is God (John 1:1)  It does not mean we can worship the Bible, but when we read the Word, we come before the living God, confronting Him.  Wow, what a reality!

It was not that David was a perfect guy that he was called ‘a man after God’s heart’. Actually he had abominable sins and mistakes.  Yet he always wanted to trust God fully and acted upon the covenant of the Lord.  When one seeks for things not according to the covenant is actually seeking after his/her ambition.  ‘Boys, be ambitious!’ is not a Bible quote.  Believers do not seek for ambition but for vision which is from God.  If I am not sure that the vision I have is from God, then most likely it is my ambition. Verse 27 shows how David prayed upon the Word of God.  Since God spoke, David prayed.  Because ‘You, Sovereign LORD, have promised this,’ David prays ‘your blessing will rest on my descendants forever.’ (Verse 29)  Because the Bible says ‘Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved’ we are saved when we call upon the name of the Lord.

There have been enough of analysis, reproach, and criticism about the Incidents of Sewol in South Korea, but what amazes me is that even non-believers criticize God due to the incident.  Why would they even mention God when they do not believe in Him?  In fact the book of Revelation shows us how non-believers curse the name of God during the tribulations. They curse God when they do not believe in Him… What a surprise!

(Rv 16:9) They were burned by the fierce heat, and they cursed the name of God, who has authority over these plagues. But they would not turn from their sins and praise his greatness.

What amazes me even more is that even the believers are somewhat enraged saying how these things could have happened if there is God.  Wow, if there is God a lion should eat vegetables?  Ship or airplanes should always go against the law of gravity?  Everything has to work perfectly (in our way) around us?  We just don’t want to acknowledge that the imperfection is due to the fall of man.  Do believers throw all ourselves in to the prayer life?  Do I live the kind of life that Jesus has shown me?  We just have no right to judge God.  We just have to trust and follow Him.  (My sincere condolences to the students and their family members of Sewol incident).

Dear Lord, as I look back my life, I can only see what embarrasses me as I compare to David’s life.  But I still hold on to your word of the covenant.  Lord, you have a long patience.  Thank you for making me your child and giving me your Spirit.  I want to abide in You.  I want to take you as my sole satisfaction and consolation.  I thank you for my growth in spirit.  Help me today to walk according to your Spirit.  Amen.
